It is a mark of conformity to the European Union directives. It is not yet available for the furniture sector. The CE self-certification mark is applied directly to the product by its manufacturer, which is why its validity depends on the honesty of the manufacturing company itself. Without any type of control from certifying bodies, the manufacturer declares that his product has been constructed respecting the safety requirements established by the EU directives. Consequently, this is just a partial guarantee for the consumer. It is logical to presume that a conscientious manufacturer will observe the safety prescriptions established by the mark while an unconscientious one will apply the mark to non-conforming products with the risk of causing damage to the consumer and with consequent legal implications.
It is freely applied by the manufacturer who self-certifies his products and accepts all the related responsibilities. There is no external control by certifying bodies. A general control is carried out by the Government whose responsibility it is to check that laws are respected. The most conscientious manufacturers can, under no obligation and of their own free will, request a body to check that the product corresponds to the EU directives.
