{"id":468,"date":"2009-01-13T10:33:24","date_gmt":"2009-01-13T10:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecovalcucine.wordpress.com\/?p=468"},"modified":"2011-09-16T17:42:11","modified_gmt":"2011-09-16T17:42:11","slug":"bioforests-operation-otonga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.valcucine.com\/magazine\/en\/2009\/01\/bioforests-operation-otonga\/","title":{"rendered":"Bioforest&#8217;s Otonga project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">In Ecuador, the ten-year old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioforest.it\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=5:progetto-otonga&amp;catid=1:progetti&amp;Itemid=8&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOtonga\u201d project<\/a>, whose name <span style=\"letter-spacing:-.2pt;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing:-.2pt;\">derives from a gigantic worm that lives in this area, <\/span><\/span>aims to purchasing strips of the primary forest on the western sides of the Andes, in order to preserve the exceptional biodiversity features of the area. More than 1,500 hectares have been purchased to this purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/valcucine\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-505\" title=\"otonga_forest\" src=\"http:\/\/ecovalcucine.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/3193827328_e5ed92db45_o.jpg\" alt=\"otonga_forest\" width=\"450\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">WHAT IS THE PRIMARY FOREST?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong> <\/strong><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The primary forest could be defined as a comprehensive diary about the evolution of life over the last million years on Earth: it really hosts a high variety of animal and vegetal species, that is an inestimable biological heritage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Currently, about 2 million species have been catalogued, although some experts estimate their total number on Earth is around 10 millions, half of which just in the area of the tropical rainforests. Every year naturalists identify about 15,000 new species of organisms, mostly insects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The term \u2018primary forest\u2019 \u2013 or virgin \u2013 means the set of forest ecosystems spontaneously developed over the millenniums. This kind of forest, which human activities such as industries never contaminated, is characterised by the growth of ancient trees which provide life to hundreds of species. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The most important primary forests are currently seven:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the basin of Congo\u2019s African rainforest;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the Amazon tropical forest;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the Southeast Asian jungles; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the North-American virgin forests;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the South-American temperate rainforest;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the snowy forests of the Siberian taiga;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:36pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:-18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">the last large European forests in Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">They play a significant role for the climate trends: in fact, they contrast since the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is caused by the countless fires and the human industrialisation and contributes to the greenhouse effect and to the global warming. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Today, these \u2018green lungs\u2019 are seriously at risk of destruction by deforestation for the cellulose and paper production or by the supply of wood to big European and American furniture factories &#8211; and Italy has the supremacy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The primary forest, however, is threatened by breeding and agriculture on a deforested land that is inevitably going to become desert. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">WHAT DOES BIOFOREST DO AND HOW DOES IT OPERATE FOR THE \u2018OTONGA\u2019 PROJECT?<\/span><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">For over 20 years, a fee, like a \u2018constant drop\u2019 for a \u2018project that lasts over time\u2019. Such amount varies according to the donations gathered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioforest.it\/index.php?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Bioforest<\/a> from its members to acquire primary forest\u2019s strips of land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">However, the strips of land\u2019s acquisition is not enough, as such strips has to be protected by the local populations who deforest the primary forest to obtain graze for the animals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The only way to do this is to \u2018instruct and educate\u2019, as \u2018only what is known exists and is therefore worth to be preserved\u2019. In other words, it is important to make the local ethnic groups aware of the primary forest\u2019s value for the survival of the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><!--more--><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">In 2003, in order to accomplish this project, at the foot of this forest construction work began on an \u2018Environmental Education Centre\u2019, ended and inaugurated on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> August 2007, to host visitors, scholars and researchers from all over the world as well as to approach the local population to the school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">At the same time, new paths are being made around the Educational Centre joining others in the forest. This lets the inhabitants reach the \u2019Centre\u2019 and helps them develop an ecosustainable frame-of-mind and to know potential alternative sources of subsistence. Moreover, lots of women with economical difficulties are involved in the community cake-making courses and can earn money for their families. Besides, there is an active production of objects made of \u2018tagua\u2019 by crafting very hard fruit composed of a substance called \u2018vegetable ivory\u2019, from a local endemic palm tree. This activity now gives 20 families a living thanks to the growing sales network primarily activated in Italy and fuelled by many volunteers, Institutes and Associations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Some of the funds allocated by BIOFOREST are invested in studies, research and publications on the Otonga flora and fauna. As a matter of fact, new plant and animal species were discovered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Our local partner, the Otonga foundation in Ecuador, has already managed about 200 scholarships for children, young people and University students that live near the Otonga forest. This was accomplished also thanks to the funds contributed by BIOFOREST.
